Tua Tagovailoa Misses Practice as Falcons QB Room Turns Into a Medical Drama
Adam Schefter reported: 'Michael Penix Jr. and Cooper Rush were full participants today. Tua Tagovailoa did not practice today.'
The ' quarterback room is currently operating less like a football depth chart and more like a triage center. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Tua Tagovailoa sat out Thursday's practice, while and Cooper Rush logged full sessions.
Having your starting quarterback miss practice is never ideal, but it hits a little different when the backup options are a guy fresh off major knee surgery and a career journeyman. If you are holding an futures ticket, this is the exact moment you start sweating through your shirt.
Tagovailoa is still dealing with an oblique injury that popped up last week and forced him to miss the season opener. When a quarterback grabs his side after a throw and sits down on the grass, you know it is not just a cramp. His absence on a Thursday points heavily toward another missed start.
That leaves the offense in the hands of Cooper Rush, who took the reins in Week 1 and immediately reminded everyone why he is a backup. Rush completed just 12 of 22 passes for 143 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in a sluggish 20-13 loss to the .
The wild card here is Penix. The fact that he is a full participant is a minor medical miracle considering he tore his ACL just ten months ago in November 2025. He was supposed to be battling Tua for the starting job before his knee gave out, and now he is suddenly the most intriguing healthy arm on the roster.
Oddsmakers and fantasy managers are now stuck in a holding pattern. Trying to handicap an offense that might pivot from Rush's conservative checkdowns to Penix's post-surgery mobility is a nightmare scenario for anyone looking to lay points on .
The Falcons host the this Sunday. Unless Tagovailoa makes a miraculous recovery by Friday, has to decide if they want to roll out Rush for another uninspiring afternoon or see if Penix's reconstructed knee is ready for live fire.
