Mitch Marner’s agent just went on a media tour to defend his client, and somehow managed to make everyone involved look worse. Darren Ferris hit the podcast circuit to claim the never protected the star winger, officially putting a bow on the most exhausting divorce of the NHL offseason.
The interview was supposed to clear the air about Marner forcing a sign-and-trade to the Vegas Golden Knights. Instead, Ferris accidentally said the quiet part out loud. He admitted he actually wanted Marner to hit the open market and leave completely empty-handed, but Marner refused.
For context, the Leafs managed to salvage Nicolas Roy out of the Vegas deal. If Ferris had his way, would have lost a franchise cornerstone for absolutely nothing just so the agent could run a bidding war.
Ferris called the free agency process a dog and pony show that Marner wanted no part of. It is objectively hilarious to complain about a lack of organizational protection while simultaneously admitting you wanted to drag your client through a 32-team circus just to squeeze out a few extra dollars.
Marner is now wearing number 93 in Vegas, citing family safety and team culture as his main reasons for locking in on the Golden Knights. He talked to other players about how Vegas treats its guys, and his mind was made up before the season even ended.
The move drastically shifted the Stanley Cup futures market, giving Vegas another massive weapon while leaving to figure out how to replace elite production. Oddsmakers clearly respect the Golden Knights' ruthless roster building, even if it means capitalizing on a fractured relationship up north.
Now Marner gets his fresh start in the desert with less media pressure and a massive new contract. But if he goes cold in the playoffs again, he is going to find out very quickly that the only protection that matters in this league is putting the puck in the net.
