Derwin James Suffers Hamstring Setback, IR Looming for Chargers Star

Coach John Harbaugh confirmed the setback and the possibility of an IR stint.
Just when you thought the might actually catch a break, the football gods have once again demanded their toll. Star safety Derwin James has suffered a setback in his return from a lingering hamstring injury, and a trip to Injured Reserve is now firmly on the table.
Head coach John Harbaugh delivered the grim update on Wednesday. James has not seen the field since September 27, and what originally looked like a standard recovery timeline has officially turned into a frustrating waiting game.
Hamstring injuries are basically the check-engine light of the NFL. You rest for a few weeks, the light turns off, you think you are good to go, and the second you try to merge onto the highway, the whole engine starts smoking again. For a defensive back who relies on explosive closing speed, trying to play through a bad hamstring is a recipe for getting cooked in man coverage.
Losing James for an extended stretch is a massive blow to a defense that relies on his ability to play everywhere from deep safety to the line of scrimmage. He is the anchor of that secondary, and replacing his production is not something you can just scheme your way out of with backup personnel.
For anyone holding Chargers defensive futures or trying to stream them in fantasy, this is a massive red flag. Without James erasing tight ends and blowing up run plays, opposing offenses are going to find a lot more breathing room over the middle of the field, making a much more vulnerable unit on a weekly basis.
If James officially lands on IR, he will be forced to sit out at least four more games. Until then, the have to figure out how to patch the massive hole in their secondary before their upcoming opponents realize the vault has been left unlocked.
