Casey Mize Hits the IL After Losing a Battle With the Dugout Steps

Just when you thought the ' pitching rotation couldn't take another weird hit, Casey Mize has officially been placed on the 15-day injured list after losing a battle with the dugout steps.
Yes, you read that right. MLB Trade Rumors confirmed the roster move Saturday night, following reports that Mize sprained his right ankle slipping on his way down into the dugout. Getting shelled by an opposing lineup is one thing, but getting taken out by stadium architecture is objectively hilarious, unless you happen to be the guy holding a ticket to see him pitch.
The timing is brutal for a guy who just cannot catch a physical break. Mize has spent the last few years fighting his own body, missing most of 2022 and all of 2023 recovering from Tommy John surgery. The Padres traded for him from the back in August hoping for some reliable rotation depth, but instead, they got a guy who has posted a rough 8.28 ERA over his last seven starts.
Before the stairs ended his regular season, Mize was sitting on a 6-10 record with a 4.32 ERA over 131.1 innings. He just got lit up for seven earned runs in four innings against the on Friday. If you were looking at the run total over on games recently, Mize was practically a walking stimulus package.
Now, has to scramble to cover his innings as they close out the final week of September. They have another matchup scheduled against on Sunday, and oddsmakers are going to have a field day adjusting the lines for whatever bullpen game the are forced to throw together. As for Mize, his regular season is officially cooked, leaving him plenty of time to ice that ankle and maybe invest in some footwear with better traction.
