Jeremy Fowler reported: 'The 49ers today are opening the practice window for WR Christian Kirk, who's on Injured Reserve. They are also promoting DL Ogbo Okoronkwo to the active roster.'

The 49ers are finally getting some good news for a wide receiver room that currently looks like a waiting room at an urgent care clinic.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, is officially opening the 21-day practice window for Christian Kirk. The veteran receiver has been stashed on Injured Reserve since late August with a calf strain. The team is also bumping defensive lineman Ogbo Okoronkwo up to the active roster.

This is a team that desperately needs a guy who can just run a route without wincing. Deebo Samuel is nursing a hamstring, Ricky Pearsall is done for the year with a PCL tear, and Jauan Jennings is battling rib and ankle issues. Dropping a veteran route-runner like Kirk back into the mix is less of a luxury and more of a basic survival tactic.

Kirk has not played a snap in 2026, but his return is a massive variable for anyone trying to handicap this offense. When a team is down its primary weapons, adding a proven commodity completely changes the math for opposing secondaries and live-betting totals.

also gets a boost in the trenches by promoting Okoronkwo. The 31-year-old veteran already has a sack and a couple of tackles in five appearances this year. He is not going to single-handedly wreck a game, but he is exactly the kind of rotational piece that keeps a pass rush breathing late in the fourth quarter.

The 49ers are coming off a tight 32-29 win over the , proving they can still put up points even when half the roster is wrapped in ice. But surviving a divisional shootout is a lot different than sustaining a playoff push.

Kirk now has three weeks to prove his calf is ready for live action before the team has to make a final roster decision. If he can get back on the field soon, the 49ers might actually have enough healthy receivers to run a standard formation without pulling a guy out of the stands.
