Set the limits before you start

• Decide the amount first. Pick a number you are prepared to lose outright, and treat it as spent the moment it is deposited.
• Set a deposit and time limit at the operator. Every regulated book is required to offer both. Setting them while you are calm is the point.
• Do not chase. Increasing a stake to recover a loss is the single most reliable way to turn a bad night into a worse one.
• Never stake borrowed money. Not credit, not a loan, not money owed to someone else.
• Do not play impaired. Alcohol and tilt both cost more than the vig.
• Take the break. Cool-off periods and self-exclusion exist and are not a last resort.

Signs it has stopped being entertainment

• Staking more than planned, more often than planned.
• Hiding how much or how often you play from people close to you.
• Borrowing, selling or moving money around to keep playing.
• Restlessness or irritability when you try to cut back.
• Playing to escape something rather than to enjoy something.

Any of these is reason enough to call the helpline for your region. Support is confidential and costs nothing, and it is there for people close to a player as well as for players.

Self-exclusion

Every regulated operator runs its own self-exclusion, and some jurisdictions run a central register that covers every licensed site at once. In Alberta that register is SelfExclusion.ca. In Ontario, self-exclusion is arranged through ConnexOntario and the operator directly.
