Mikel Brown Jr. is making his official NBA debut on Wednesday, but the Brooklyn Nets are keeping the training wheels firmly attached. Head coach Jordi Fernandez confirmed the rookie point guard will be on a strict minutes restriction for the season opener, according to reporting from Brian Lewis of the New York Post.

The limitation stems from a sprained left ankle Brown suffered early in training camp. The injury forced him to sit out Brooklyn's first three preseason games while the rest of the roster got up to speed.

When Brown finally got on the floor, he looked exactly like the guy the Nets drafted. He dropped 15 points and grabbed three boards in just 18 minutes of preseason action. That kind of per-minute production is exactly why fans are already treating him like a franchise savior, but an 18-minute cap means you are getting a highly concentrated dose of rookie basketball instead of a full starter's workload. It is the basketball equivalent of getting a sample cup at an ice cream shop when you wanted a waffle cone.

For anyone looking at Wednesday's prop markets or setting daily fantasy lineups, this is the giant flashing caution sign you need to see. It is impossible to project a rookie's ceiling when his head coach is actively holding a stopwatch on the sideline.

The Nets are playing the long game here, which is the only logical move for a rebuilding roster. Expect Brown to hover in that 15-to-20 minute range for the first week or two until that ankle proves it can handle the nightly grind of an NBA rotation.
